When covering recruiting, it’s easy for me to use the terminology loosely with “official visits” and “unofficial visits”. So, what’s the difference between the two visits, if any, and what does it mean for OSU recruiting?By NCAA definition, official visits are any visits to a college campus by a college-bound student athlete paid for by the college, whereas unofficial visits are paid for by the student athlete or their parents. But naturally, the NCAA has more stipulations than just who pays for the visit.First Opportunity to Visit “officially”As with this time of year, the term “unofficial visit” is used regularly in football for one main reason: Age. The NCAA stipulates that “official” recruiting visits may only be taken starting the first day of classes of the prospect’s senior year in high school. And with the entire 2016 class already signed (For the most part), OSU is now recruiting 2017 prospects, who won’t start their senior year until some time in August. Unofficial visits may take place at any time, except during dead recruiting periods. How many schools can prospects officially visit?Prospects are allowed to take a maximum of five “official” expense-paid visits, with no more than one permitted to one school. Which means if you’re committed to OSU, then 2017 Quarterback Jelani Woods is only allowed one official visit to Stillwater his senior season where OSU foots the bill for the trip. Which means most prospects are very selective about which game they attend, and OSU is selective about which game they encourage prospects to attend.Length of visitThe benefit of an unofficial visit is that there is no time limit. So long as the student athlete or their parent is paying for lodging, transportation, etc., they can stay as long as they like. But official visits cannot exceed 48 hours, and that clock begins as soon as the prospect arrives on campus.Transportation, Entertainment, Lodging, Meals and ParkingAll of these can be provided by OSU for prospects taking official visits. That’s not the case with unofficial visits, where the school may not provide any of these services.Typically, Oklahoma State will host official visitors on big gamedays in Stillwater. Homecoming and Hoops is one example of a big weekend, where they can host both basketball and football recruits for visits and give a good experience. In the past OSU has aimed for one big official visit weekend to get as many prospects on campus. And with OSU facing competition to host prospects during the football season, the Cowboys have found recent success with this taking place just after football season concludes. This year, OSU hosted a slew of top prospects on Jan. 15 and 16th, just after the season ended and about three weeks until signing day. It’s a good opportunity for the committed recruits to get to know one another and, for those undecided, it’s also an opportunity for those who have their mind made up to potentially sway others into becoming a Cowboy. If you’re looking for the comments section, it has moved to our forum, The Chamber. GAME PREVIEW After a couple of disappointing draws, Real Madrid welcome Cristiano Ronaldo back into the fold feeling more upbeat on the back of their 3-1 win over Real Sociedad.Sociedad had won three games in a row to start the season but Madrid got an opening goal from youngster Borja Mayoral, making his first start of the season, and a sublime third from Gareth Bale. That Mayoral looked ready to contribute and Bale gave himself a shot in the arm is a big boost in the absence of Karim Benzema. Now, Madrid get Ronaldo back and suddenly look spoilt for choice rather than stretched again. They can choose between Bale, Ronaldo, Marco Asensio and Lucas Vazquez as well as Mayoral up front and have Isco, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Dani Ceballos among their options around anchorman Casemiro in midfield.Ceballos is one of few players yet to be worked into the starting lineup and could get his chance against his former club.

The Insta360 Evo is a 3D camera that folds into a 360 camera. Aloysius Low/CNET Shenzhen-based Insta360 makes pretty darn good and affordable 360-degree cameras. Its latest Insta360 Evo is no different, but with a clever twist.Instead of being a just a 360-degree camera, the Evo’s default mode places both cameras side by side to take 3D pictures. To convert it into a 3D camera, you just need to unlock the catch and fold it, turning it into a cube-shaped 360 camera. It’s clever and I loved the design, as it adds versatility to what would normally just be a 3D camera, as well as take advantage of Insta360’s capabilities in 360 shooting.Look Ma, I’m a changed camera! Aloysius Low/CNET The Evo shoots at up to 5.7K at 30 frames per second with its f/2.2 dual cameras. Other shooting modes are also available, such as 4K at 30 or 50fps, or 3,008×1,504 pixels at 100fps. It can also take 18-megapixel photos. There’s built-in six-axis gyroscopic stabilization and it uses Insta360’s software-based FlowState stabilization for super smooth video.I’ve been giving the camera a spin over a few days, and came away impressed. You can also share 3D vidoes to FacebookBut even then, unless you’re a pro at the cross-eyed technique for viewing 3D images, it’s hard to view the images in three dimensions without a Google Cardboard, an Oculus Go or a Samsung Gear VR. HTC Vive Focus support will be added soon. The HoloFrame case slips over the display to let you view 3D images and videos. Aloysius Low/CNET If you’re viewing the 3D images on a phone, Insta360 has come up with a cool solution called HoloFrame. It’s a transparent $30 iPhone case that you pop over the display. The Insta360 app than uses eye-tracking technology to display a 3D image, with the phone case helping convert the screen to 3D.It’s currently available for the iPhone X, XS, XS Max and XR, with versions for the Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+, S9+ and Note 8 coming soon. It sounds great, and the good news is that it works. While earlier firmware had issues with video playback, in particularly objects doubling up on the screen even after calibration, a new update fixes all of these problems and delivers quite a perfect experience that wowed me. HoloFrame is a clever yet simple way to add 3D viewing to a normal phone, even if 3D content is almost dead. You can also use Google Cardboard to watch 3D videos and photos. Retailing at $420 and available to order now, the Insta360 is lots of fun if you’re looking to try something different with 3D, while still shooting 360-degree video and pictures. US president Donald Trump (R) talks with US Supreme Court chief justice John Roberts as he departs after delivering his State of the Union address to a joint session of the US Congress on Capitol Hill in Washington, US on 30 January 2018. Photo: ReutersUS chief justice John Roberts on Wednesday pointedly defended the independence of the federal judiciary a day after president Donald Trump called a judge who ruled against his policy barring asylum for certain immigrants an “Obama judge,” but Trump swiftly rejected the rebuke. The remarks by Roberts represented his first public response to Trump over the Republican president’s persistent criticism of the federal courts. Opponents of Trump have called his criticism of judges an attack on the rule of law in the United States.”We do not have Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges,” Roberts, a conservative who was appointed by Republican former President George W. Bush, said in a statement released by the Supreme Court in response to a news media inquiry.”What we have is an extraordinary group of dedicated judges doing their level best to do equal right to those appearing before them. That independent judiciary is something we should all be thankful for,” Roberts added, though his statement did not mention Trump by name.In a Twitter post, Trump wrote in response: “Sorry Chief Justice John Roberts, but you do indeed have ‘Obama judges,’ and they have a much different point of view than the people who are charged with the safety of our country.”It is unusual for a US chief justice, who presides over the nine-member US Supreme Court, to issue such a statement in response to a president. The US constitution established the federal judiciary as a co-equal branch of government with the executive and legislative branches as part of a system of checks and balances on power. Presidents nominate federal judges and the Senate confirms them.Ilya Somin, a law professor at George Mason University in Virginia, said Roberts’ unusual direct response to Trump “is sending up a signal that Trump has gone beyond the pale of responsible political discourse.””For a long time the chief justice didn’t respond to it. I suspect at some point Roberts decided enough was enough and he had to say something,” Somin added.Oath Of OfficeRoberts, who administered the oath of office to Trump when he was sworn in as president last year, has himself been the target of Trump’s attacks, in particular because of a 2012 ruling that preserved Obama’s signature domestic policy achievement, the Affordable Care Act, dubbed Obamacare. In a tweet after that ruling, Trump wrote, “Congratulations to John Roberts for making Americans hate the Supreme Court because of his BS.”Trump on Tuesday took aim at US district judge Jon Tigar in San Francisco, who on Monday temporarily blocked an order by the president that barred asylum for immigrants who enter the country illegally from Mexico, the latest courtroom defeat for Trump on immigration policy. Tigar was appointed by Democratic former president Barack Obama.”This was an Obama judge,” Trump said. “And I’ll tell you what. It’s not going to happen like this anymore.”Trump also blasted the entire San Francisco-based 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals, which hears appeals from federal courts in nine western states including California.Trump called the 9th Circuit unfair and a “disgrace.” That court has ruled against Trump’s administration in several high-profile cases including his travel ban targeting people from several Muslim-majority countries and his bid to rescind a program that protects from deportation hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants brought into the country as children. In a Twitter post on Wednesday, Trump heaped scorn on the idea that the 9th Circuit “was indeed an ‘independent judiciary,'” and said its rulings “are making our country unsafe! Very dangerous and unwise!”Judges in that region have also blocked construction of the Keystone XL pipeline project Trump has championed, and his administration’s effort to restrict the military service of transgender troops. In the asylum case, Tigar issued a temporary restraining order against the asylum rules, calling them an “extreme departure” from prior practice.Trump last year referred to a jurist who ruled against him on his travel ban as a “so-called judge.” Trump as a presidential candidate in 2016 said a judge in a case involving Trump University was biased against him because of the jurist’s Mexican-American heritage. With the help of a Senate controlled by his fellow Republicans, Trump has appointed a succession of conservative judges in a bid to move the federal judiciary to the right. His appointments of Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court have solidified its conservative majority for perhaps years to come.Roberts issued his statement in response to a request for comment from the Associated Press about Trump’s Tuesday remarks.
Two people swim at a beach in Vieques, Puerto Rico. One of the bays on the island is famous for its bioluminescent plankton, which are slowly recovering after Hurricane Maria. On a normal night, dozens of tourists would be gaping at the glowing sea life on Mosquito Bay, a cove named after a legendary pirate ship in Vieques, Puerto Rico. But on a night in mid-December, it’s empty. The loudest sounds are the frogs croaking in the mangroves.Hurricane Maria wreaked havoc on the small island 8 miles off the coast of Puerto Rico, destroying power systems, ripping apart homes and damaging its bioluminescent bay, one of the brightest in the world and a lifeline for its vital tourism industry. For weeks after the storm, the water was dark. But, slowly, it’s starting to glow again, as the delicate chemistry of the bay recovers from the hurricane’s disruptive winds and dousing of fresh water. Nearly three months after the storm, we paddle out on kayaks with Angie Hernandez, a guide for the Vieques-based ecotourism company Black Beard Sports. The stars are brilliant overhead. We’re here tonight to look down into the water for luminous sea life called dinoflagellates. These single-celled plankton light up when they are disturbed. When plankton are numerous and conditions are optimal, running your hand through the water leaves a trail of flickering light. The species here glows blue-green. It’s called Pyrodinium bahamense, or “the whirling fire of the Bahamas.” Hernandez and another guide say that when the bay is glowing at full force, you can actually tell what kind of fish are moving underwater based on the shape of the glow. Fish jumping above the surface leave a trail of luminous splashes. When it rains, they say the whole surface of the water is alight.Edith Widder, a bioluminescence specialist and the co-founder of the Ocean Research and Conservation Association, says glowing is a defense mechanism for these creatures, which share characteristics with both plants and animals. The flashes may alert larger predators to the presence of whatever is disrupting the plankton.“So, it’s remarkably complicated behavior for a single-celled creature, and boy can it be spectacular,” she says. But hurricanes ruin the light show. Rain disrupts the bay’s chemistry with lots of fresh water. Hurricane Maria damaged the mangroves surrounding the bay, which provide an essential vitamin to the dinoflagellates, Widder says. And high winds can actually push the glowing creatures out into the open ocean. “Winds could have pushed the water out of the bay, out of the mouth of the bay,” Hernandez adds. After other hurricanes, it reportedly took months before the bay started glowing again, she says.We stop at an area of the bay close to the mouth and dip our hands in the water, leaving a trail of light. “I’m pushing the paddle forward and you’re able to see a ball, like a formation of light,” Hernandez demonstrates. It’s striking, and yet it’s only a fraction of the usual brightness, she says — perhaps a two on a 10-point scale. Here’s a video created by a recent visitor to Vieques that gives a sense of the glow:Widder says there are only a handful of bioluminescent bays worldwide – and there used to be many more. “And they’re not nearly as bright, any of them, as they used to be. Which is distressing.”Pollution is actually having a bigger impact than hurricanes, she says. “We’re releasing so much stuff into our water with no real clear understanding of what its impacts may be on these very complex ecosystems.”Mark Martin-Bras, the director of research for the Vieques Conservation and Historical Trust, takes weekly water samples to monitor the bay. He says they’ve seen fluctuations in luminescence since the storm and it’s not clear how long it will take for the bay to recover. But, he adds, “the marine world has a way of surviving and cleaning itself, to a point, from these natural disasters.”This difficult situation provides an opportunity, he says, to learn more about how this ecosystem deals with powerful hurricanes. And it serves as a reminder: “The attraction of this island, and the power of it, comes from the natural things, and you want to protect them rather than exploit them.” It’s the crown jewel of the island’s natural wonders, he says. “It’s magic.”On the bay, Hernandez says the flickers of light from the water are a relief. Life after Maria has been extremely difficult. She went weeks without regular running water. And she’s only had a handful of tours come through. But tonight she can see the bay is coming back.“Seeing this now, after seeing it diminish, this gives me a lot of hope,” she says.Copyright 2017 NPR. To see more, visit http://www.npr.org/. Share
New research shows that risky outdoor play is not only good for children’s health but also encourages creativity, social skills and resilience. Children who participated in physical activity such as climbing and jumping, rough and tumble play and exploring alone, displayed greater physical and social health, the results showed.”We found that play environment where children could take risks promoted increased play time, social interactions, creativity and resilience,” said author Mariana Brussoni, assistant professor at department of pediatrics at The University of British Columbia. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting'”These positive results reflect the importance of supporting children’s outdoor play opportunities as means of promoting children’s health and active lifestyles,” Brussoni said. “Playgrounds with natural elements such as trees and plants, changes in height have positive impacts on health, behaviour and social development of children. These spaces give children a chance to learn about risks as well as their own limits.” Safety concerns, such as injury, were seen as the main reason for limiting risky outdoor play. Playground safety standards and too much supervision prevented children from engaging in risky activities.”We recommend considering policy, practice and built environment approaches to risky outdoor play that balance safety with children’s other health outcomes,” Brussoni added. The study appeared in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. IANS

Intellectuals including poets, scholars and writers got united to support the movement led by Mamata Banerjee and the Singur movement became the Waterloo of Left Front rule in Bengal. Later, the then Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had confessed in an interview on a vernacular television channel that the decision to acquire farmland to set up the factory was wrong.
